Hi Winnie,

In regard of Thomas Quick I know he was born in 1920 in Litherland, Liverpool, England.
I don't know were he was for the 1921 census?
I cannot find him on the 1939 register ( which everyone had to register on )?
I cannot find a marriage for him or any children?

I know he died on the 27th November, 1977 he lived at 117 Millers Lane, Platt Bridge, Wigan.
I was told this by another family member which was sometime ago, unfortunately they are not able to confirm this now, due to age.
Any help that you can give me, I would really appreciate.

Regards,
Pauline.

Thomas Quick was my uncle. The address on Millers Lane was my grandmothers' home. We always called him Sam. He never married, never had children.

Hi Winnie,

Thank you for your marvellous help - my brain is ticking

mrs m I don't know what to say we are related - I am so pleased to be in contact with you

I have lots to tell you and I am sure you have as well?

Thomas Quick's mother Letitia/Celia Quick nee Kirby was a sister to my Grandad Richard Kirby.

What was your Grandmother's name?

What can you tell me about Thomas / Sam?

Where railway did he work for? What was his job?

What did he die of?

I cannot wait to hear from you so I can share my information with you

Kindest regards,
Pauline

willowandpepper don't think we are related. My grandparents arrived in Wigan in 1926, grandad was a coal miner. I don't know exactly when, but Sam made good friends with Charlie Mcguigan (one of my uncles), who took Sam home with him at a young age. And there Sam stayed for the rest of his life. He passed away from emphysema I believe, he was a heavy smoker. His final resting place is unknown to us, because there's no-one left to ask. Unofficially my grandmother adopted him. But I've always known him as my uncle and a McGuigan.

As far as I remember, he worked at Springview, cleaning trains, maintaining the yard etc. He did serve in the military during WW2, just as his 5 adopted brothers did, unknown what branch. I think he was in N Africa for a time, but don't quote me on that. Sam never spoke much about his life, although we believe he had no other family that we knew of. Perhaps he didn't know he had family either. He was very soft spoken, reddish sandy hair, crystal blue eyes.

I'll speak with my brother, maybe he remembers more than I do. He'll be surprised

Hi mrs m,

Your Grandmother but have been a lovely woman to adopt all of those boys

Thomas Quick in my family tree was born on the 4th March 1920 in Litherland, Liverpool.

He was in the workhouse with his mother Letitia Quick - she died in 1921 when Thomas was 7mths old. His father left for Canada and did not come back.

So basically he was an orphan - I don't know at what age he left the workhouse probably about 14 yrs?

Can I ask who registered his death?

Do you know his birthday?

Did he sound like he had come from the Wigan area?

Kind regards

Hello again willowandpepper,
My gran, Annie McGuigan, took him in when Sam was still a young boy, maybe 14, but he was working when he got took in. he just became another of her natural sons, lol. They lived at 16 Garden Street in Scholes at that time before it all got torn down.

I'm thinking my uncle Charlie or my gran would have registered his death. I know he's not buried with the McGuigans. Never been able to find out where. I think you have the right birthday. Yes, he very much sounded like a Wiganer. Have spoken with my brother and he thinks Sam was in the Army and stationed in Gibraltar.

We may have a photo somewhere. Are you on Facebook?

Hi gaffer, Thank you for the information in regard of a Thmas Quick dying in 1977

Hi mrs m

Brilliant idea in regard of photograph. I would love to see it.

I also have a photograph of his brother John Quick - he was a
nightwatchman for a army camp in WW2. Well hopefully they are brothers

Would be good to compare and see if there is a likeness??

What do you think about what gaffer mentioned about Thomas Quick who died in 1977 - and his birth date is 17th October 1919.

On the birth certificate that I have for Thomas Quick it says 4th March1920

Such a mystery are they the same person?

Look forward to hearing what you think

In one post above you said born in 1919, and in another 1920. Being in the US, I have a hard time accessing UK records but I'll try to find out.

Hello Winnie
Thanks for the info, they are all my family members. The lady in Australia is also a family member.

Annie Lindsay/Mcguigan is my grandmother and Matthew is my great grandfather. And if you are related to the lady in Australia, would you be related to me also? The lady (her maiden name was George) in Australia is my mothers' (Anne Marciano)cousin. How many other surprises will pop up?

willowandpepper,
So sorry your thread got a bit sidetracked.

Don't think Sam/Thomas was 7 months old when Leticia passed. March 1920 to July 1921, makes him 16-17 months old. And 4 months older going by gaffers birth date in Oct 1919. i think the 1919 date is an error, at least on BMD

Hi mrs m

No problem, I am so glad for you that you have found a family connection.

Your right my calculation in reegard of Thomas's age was wrong. He would have been 16 - 17 months old as you say.

I am glad that you think that the age mentioned on the BMD is wrong - I also think that.

So on that assumption I think my Thomas Quick is Sam??

Now I am wondering why he would call himself Sam?

Would you happen to know the names of any local churches were Thomas Quick / Sam may have been buried?

Thank you for any ideas you may have

Kind regards,

Hi willowandpapper,
Well, Winnie has certainly caught our attention. I hope she can figure out the connection to the Lindsays.

Yes, I think my Sam and your Thomas are the same and March 1920 birthday being correct. Does the birth certificate only show Thomas? No middle name? Why Sam? I've asked that all my life, lol. I wonder why he never shows on any of the registries as a lodger or whatever at none of the addresses he lived at.

He didn't pass away at home on Millers Lane, I believe it was Leigh Hospice back then. I am pretty sure he was cremated, but no idea where his ashes are. Don't know how to find out either. I'm thinking my uncle Charlie would have made the cremation arrangements at Ince. Maybe a mass at St Marys in Platt Bridge.

Hi mrs m,

Sorry I have not replied sooner, been working on my allotment while the weather is good.

Back to your questions above

On his birth certificate it just gives his name of Thomas Quick. His father was called Thomas Ellis Quick and they lived at 45 Hands Street, Litherland.

But unfortunately in 1921 Letitia Quick his mother ended up in the workhouse with Thomas. I do not know what happened to Thomas after his mother died. Did he stay there unitl he was able to be in full-time employment.
There was no mention in the family of someone called Sam either?

Do you have any other addresses that he may have lived at?

Did he go on holiday at any time or disappear for a few days??

I ask this because he had a brother called John Quick
who was born in 1918 - but he passed away in 1950.

I have been searching for Thomas Quick for years and to be in contact with you is amazing, even though we are not blood related. To actually be in contact with somone who knew Thomas - it takes my breath away[:t

What other addresses is he connected with?

Look forward to your reply

Kind regards

Hello willowandpepper,
I never remember him going on holiday or taking time for himself. Always seemed content to be at home. He never mentioned having brother, just that he was orphaned.

Addresses I remember (I'm 68 so bear with me)
9 Garden St, Scholes
16 Garden St, Scholes
Worsley Mesnes (I'll ask my brother about this one)
67 Sefton Rd, Goose Green

I have a pic of Sam sent to me on WhatsApp. I have no idea how to post it on here. Are you on Facebook or Messenger?

Hi mrs m,

Thomas was an orphan his mother died in 1921 in the workhouse. His father emigrated to Canada in 1926 and he died in Canada in 1938 and as far as I know he never came back to see Thomas and John.

I am hoping to find out how long he stayed in the workouse maybe there will be some record of him?

If he stayed till 13 - 14 yrs old he would think of himself as an orphan.

I am on Facebook - but I don't have a clue how to send a picture. Any help I would appreciate

I am glad that you think they are similar in looks - so we are correct in thinking your Thomas Quick/Sam - is my Thomas Quick.

John Quick lived in Wiltshire but he died young at aged 32 yrs. He was knocked off his bicycle and died 3 weeks later.

Many thanks

I don't know how long this will take or even be successful.

But I never thought I would be in contact with someone who knew Thomas/Sam.

So fingers crossed.
